Fractional CO2 laser for sale: what to check before you buy

If you are searching for a fractional CO2 laser for sale, or trying to buy a CO2 laser machine for a med spa or physician practice, these are the questions worth settling first. This is general information. Your physician and your state's rules decide how any laser is used.

Who can buy and use a CO2 laser (including a CO2 laser for a med spa)

A CO2 laser is a medical device. Who may purchase it, who must supervise treatments and who may operate it vary by state. Many states require a physician to own, supervise or delegate the procedures, and that includes med spa settings. Confirm the rules with your state medical board and a healthcare attorney before you buy. Saratoga sells to and supports physician practices.

RF tube vs glass tube

The tube is the heart of a CO2 laser. Two designs are common: an RF-excited tube and a glass (DC-excited) tube. The comparison below is general; individual models differ, so ask each manufacturer for its own figures.

TopicRF-excited tubeGlass (DC) tube
How it is poweredExcited by radio-frequency energy.Excited by direct current.
Typical buildSealed tube, often metal or ceramic bodied.Gas-filled glass tube.
Pulse responseGenerally quicker to switch on and off, which suits short pulses and scanned patterns.Generally slower to respond.
CoolingVaries by model. Ask.Often water-cooled. Ask.
Tube replacementAsk who replaces it, how long it takes and what it costs.Ask the same questions, and about how often.

Ask for the tube type, the cooling method, the warranty on the tube and the replacement cost in writing. The Bella Donna uses an RF tube, according to the manufacturer.

Fractional vs full ablative

ApproachWhat it doesWhat to consider
FractionalAblates microscopic columns in a scanned pattern and leaves tissue between them intact.Healing generally differs from full resurfacing. Depth and density are physician-set parameters. Several sessions may be planned.
Full ablativeRemoves the whole surface layer across the treated area.Recovery is generally longer and the aftercare more involved. The physician decides whether it is appropriate.

Many practices want one system that can do both, with adjustable depth, density and scan patterns. Treatment selection, settings and aftercare are always the treating physician's decisions, and results vary by patient. Nothing here is a guarantee of any result.

What to ask a distributor

  • A written spec sheet. Which figures are manufacturer figures? What is the exact configuration on the quote?
  • Regulatory paperwork. Ask for written regulatory documentation for each indication you plan to offer or market.
  • What is included. Console, arm, handpieces or probes, consumables, shipping and installation.
  • Warranty. Length, what is covered (is the handpiece covered?), who services it and how fast.
  • Training. On-site or remote, who attends, what protocols are covered and what support follows.
  • Service after the warranty. Cost, parts availability, support hours and how to reach a person.
  • Total cost. Purchase or lease, taxes, consumables, maintenance and insurance. Ask your carrier how lasers are covered.
  • References and a demo. Other practices you can speak with, and a chance to see the system.
  • The company. How long they have sold lasers, and who answers the phone when something breaks.

Training and service

A laser is only as useful as the protocols and support behind it. Before you buy, find out what clinical training your team receives, who you call with a question, and what happens if the system needs service. Ask your specialist about training and support for your configuration, and get the answers in writing on your quote. Saratoga has supported physician practices since 1994.

Buying questions

How much does a fractional CO2 laser cost?+

Pricing varies by manufacturer, configuration, handpieces, shipping, training and how you pay for it. Saratoga does not publish a list price here. Request a written quote and a financing estimate for the configuration you want.

Can a med spa buy a CO2 laser?+

Rules for who may own a medical laser and who may operate it differ by state. Many states require physician involvement or supervision. Check with your state medical board and a healthcare attorney before you buy. Saratoga serves physician practices.

Should I buy a new or a used CO2 laser?+

Used systems can differ widely in condition, warranty, service access and training. Whichever you consider, ask for the same written documentation: specifications, warranty, service terms, training and the regulatory paperwork for the indications you plan to offer.

What is the difference between fractional and full ablative CO2 treatment?+

Fractional treatment ablates microscopic columns and leaves tissue between them intact. Full ablative treatment removes the whole surface layer. Healing time generally differs, but settings, patient and protocol all matter. Your physician decides the approach.

What should I ask a CO2 laser distributor?+

Ask for a written spec sheet, the full list of what is included, warranty and service terms, training details, the total cost of ownership and references from other practices. The checklist on this page covers each in more detail.
